Malnutrition Problem In India

After 72 years of Independence,India is still home to largest number of malnutritioned children in the world. According to
the 2017 Global Hunger Index (GHI) Report ranked India 100th out of 118 countries.
Inspite of being the largely agricultural economy, there is a huge population who sleeps hungry every day.
It is not the problem with our government but there are greater issues whch are:
- ever expanding population which needs to be fed
- lack of awareness among people reagrding nutrition
- lack of hygeine
- increased use of chemicles in agriculture and food products which decrease the nutritional value of food
- ineffective policy implementation by the states since it is a state subject

To tackle the problem various initiatives have been taken by the government:
- Mid day meal scheme for school children
- Fortification of food which increases its nutritional value
- SABLA schemes for adolescent girls who are highly prone to malnutrition
- Schemes for mothers like Matru Vandana Yojana, MAA
- Integrated child development scheme
- Various initiatives for cleanliness like WASH, swachh Bharat

Way forward:
- Government has already taken many steps but there is a greater need to spread it in backward areas more effectively.
- Proper implementation is required.
- Need to conduct more awareness drives
- More inclusiveness through including panchayats

In about seven years, the median individual in India will be 29 years, making it the youngest country in the world.
Hence to utilize the young human resource of our country, we need to make it healthy as well and free of malnutrition.
